The Arc of the St. Johns is blessed with so many friends who embrace our mission to provide dignity and hope to men, women and children with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD).? We try to reach out to them only when our individuals experience very special and specific needs, and they have helped too many times to recount. ?From the very onset, SURF QUEST enjoyed the cultivating support of dozens of friends and donors. Just over the past several weeks our individuals received a “fleet” of three-wheelers to enhance their health and dexterity. ?Kayla has been struggling with her advancing CP, and a wonderful new friend made a gift of a practically new scooter (zoom, zoom).? And, our friend Jeff has endured an expanding black spot on his television screen at his home.? We asked a group of friends for help and within just a few hours a brand new flat screen TV was on order and last Thursday it was fired up and Jeff was ready for some football!
THANK YOU, FRIENDS!

The following news article featured in the St. Augustine Record (10/6/2015) is a great story about Michelle Mollenhour, a 23 year old born with Turner Syndrome, who is an employee at the Tropical Smoothie restaurant in the Shops of Murabella since early this year. The article describes how T Curtin of the The Arc of the St. Johns helped her to get the position through The Arc’s “supported employment” program. Great job Michelle, everyone at the Arc and to the owners and managers of the Tropical Smoothie franchise. Check out the complete article by clicking here.

Here at The Arc of the St. Johns we have a young lady who is almost sixteen, who is an active client in our Behavioral Services program.? Her diagnosis is quadriplegic – Cerebral Palsy.? While minimally ambulatory, Kayla has challenging dexterity in all four limbs.? Propelling a regular wheel chair is practically impossible.? She is gifted, she is in public school, and wants to be able to move around the campus as all students do.
We are in search of a gently used electric wheel chair or scooter for Kayla that may no longer be in use.? This would be a great way to perpetuate the memory of another; or to celebrate the achievements of someone who has recovered from the need.? In any case, a donation of this level will be much appreciated and appropriately acknowledged.
Perhaps there is something in your personal and professional circles that will meet Kayla’s particular need.? If so, please contact Neal Benson at NBenson@arcsj.org, or (904) 824-7249 or pass this request along with my contact information to someone you may know who can help. Thanks, as always, for entertaining our requests.
The Lions Club President – Wayne Mancil, lugged a big, big check out to The Arc of the St. Johns and presented it to Lynne Funcheon and Kathy Jackson to help with the purchase of a new cargo trailer for The Arc’s exciting newest program – SURF QUEST. “This gift is the result of our annual Seafood Festival,” Mancil said. “When we heard about SURF QUEST, we were all touched by The Arc’s commitment to making life a little bit better for people with disabilities. We hope this gift will help get SURF QUEST to the next level.”
Many, many thanks to our friends at The Lions Club of St. Augustine!

Chris O. has been in services at The Arc of the St. Johns for several years now. He was in the first graduating class of The Arc’s St. Johns Community Campus, a Charter School for young adults age 18-22 with IDD. This month Chris celebrates his fourth year of paid employment at The Arc of the St. Johns, helping keep the grounds of our beautiful main campus beautiful and clean. Great job and congratulations Chris!

The Arc of the St. Johns – Surf Quest Beach Day is scheduled for this coming Saturday, May 16th, from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. What’s different about this month’s event is the location where the event will be held. The new location beginning this month and continuing through the 2015 schedule will be the Mary Street beach access ramp in Crescent Beach. We want to remind everyone that the event is open to all individuals with disabilities. So come on out and enjoy this wonderful recreational water sport activity this weekend.

The Arc of the St. Johns is sending out a plea to our supporters as we are still in need of TWO new adult three-wheeler pedal bikes. Due to the growing size of our PE classes we have found that the only one we currently have is not enough for the demand to use the bikes. For those experiencing challenges with mobility, the pedaling is a satisfying therapy and excellent exercise.
We have already received our first contribution for the purchase of one of the two, three-wheeled bikes that cost about $270.00 a piece at the local Target store. However, we really need your continued support to make the purchase happen. If you are looking to help out and pitch in a few dollar, we make your donation super safe and easy on our website at www.arcsj.org . Simply click on the “Donate Now” tab at the top of the Home-page, complete the information and type “Bikes” in the comments box. $10, $20, $50, any amount will make it happen for the great folks we server at The Arc of the St. Johns.
